The Sri Lankan elephant is a tremendous visitor attraction. A popular way of observing elephants in Sri Lanka is by visiting the Elephant Orphanage at Pinnawela, where abandoned wild elephants are cared for. There are over 60 elephants including some young only a few weeks' old. This is said to be the largest captive herd of elephants in the world. The best times to view the elephants at close quarters are around 0915 and 1315, when the baby elephants are bottle-fed with vast amounts of milk. Every day the elephants are driven across the road, down a lane, to the river Maha Oya, where they are bathed. Visitors can sit and observe the elephants being scrubbed all over with a rough coconut husks. Some mahouts (people who look after them) may even let you help them if the elephant is a tame one. Visitors to Sri Lanka have witnessed these mighty beasts parade streets of Kandy during Perahara season in August, participating in peraheras (processions).
